Dynamometer is a device designed to measure power of the car. It is used to measure the mechanical force and the twisting movement (torque) generated by the engine. Charles Babbage is the founder of this device.
There are two main types of dynamometer – engine dynamometer and Chassis dynamometer. The former is directly connected to the engine and it measures the torque and the power directly from the engine. It does not take into account the loss of power in the drive train. Chassis dynamometer on the other hand is used to measure the torque and the power without the removal of the engine from the framework of the automobile.
Dynamometer is used to increase the efficiency of the engines. They are invented for the modification and the improvement of the technology of the engine. A dynamometer is basically devised to determine and evaluate the power of the machine and transmit the power at different locations of the automobile. By this procedure we can get a good power transfer by allowing the power of the engine to get transmitted. E.g. if the dynamometer of the engine has got 400Nm of torque and the chassis dynamometer has only 350 Nm then to save the loss of the power the efficiency of the engine should be improved.
The dynamometer operates by measuring the ability of the engine to move the load and subjecting the engine various loads. A dynamometer is generally linked to the computer which does a mathematical calculation to determine the output of the result. This calculation gives the maximum output or the speed of the engine. The output of the engine is measured in graphic. Almost all the type of operation of the engine can be calculated during the run of a dynamometer.
Dynamometer is quite expensive equipment. It is very reliable equipment which is used to serve a particular function. In some cases it is portable and in some other it is fixed directly to the automobile. The greatest utility of this equipment is that it can detect all the functions of the car. Inspite of these utility often people cannot buy it because of their unaffordable price range. Dynamometers are also used to measure the horse power of the car and are also used for turning the car up.
The engine Dynamometer is done by transferring the engine out of the car. This type of dynamometer can measure the correct horse power of the engine because the measurement is done from the flywheels. This type of dynamometer is designed for the car manufacturer and not for the common people because they are too expensive to afford. The manufacturer uses them to detect the performance of the engine. Chassis dynamometer is the one that is normally used by the common people. It the best type because one does not need to remove it from the engine. However it has a disadvantage because unlike the former it does not measure at the flywheels.
